The SF SBDC in partnership with FIVE STAR RESTAURANT CONSULTANTS is hosting a one day series of seminars called RESTAURANT BOOTCAMP. The seminars and workshops are geared towards providing information, education and services to potential restaurateurs. Check back for location, enrollment and class updates.

SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS

HOW TO PURCHASE A RESTAURANT AND NEGOTIATE A LEASE
This seminar is presented by leasing consultant Mark Leonard in collaboration with Colleen Meharry, restaurant broker for Starboard and landlord for some of San Francisco’s top restaurants. The seminar educates the entrepreneur on strategies for negotiating for their restaurant or bar space to add value to their business, reduce expenditures and plan for a successful exit strategy.

FOOD AND MENU COSTING CLASS
This class focuses on the importance of food costing for profitability in your restaurant or bar. Attendees are taught how to cost out their product, how to apply industry standard formulas for menu pricing, strategies for maintaining food cost percentages for profitability and managing inventory and theft. Attendees will cost out several recipes from an imaginary restaurant and be given a take-away costing workbook. 

Top Ten Secrets for Launching a Successful Lounge Operation
This class is taught by FIVE STAR Consultant Shell Thomas who is a twenty year veteran in bar and club operations and has won several national awards for his cocktail menus. This seminar teaches the attendee how to successfully bring all of the pieces together prior to launching a successful concept in the bar and club industry. Special focus is given to marketing and public relations to create the “buzz” prior to launching.

HOW TO HIRE AND RETAIN GREAT RESTAURANT EMPLOYEES
This class is taught by Human Resources specialist Julie Chendes from Next Level Strategies.  This seminar teaches the strategies that Human Resource companies utilize in hiring great employees for their clients. Other areas include compliance with labor law, meal and rest breaks, exempt versus non-exempt, how to analyze a resume, important industry specific questions to ask during an interview and job performance metrics.

LEAVE A LASTING IMPRESSION:
CREATING A SUCCESSFUL LOGO AND IDENTITY

This class is taught by Graphic Designer and Commercial Photographer Troy Ziel from Zieldesign. This class will teach the attendees the strategies that professionals use to create successful branding and logos that represent their company and concept. The Instructor will dive into the hidden meanings behind logos as well as teach the top 5 tips to creating that perfect logo that customers will remember.


PANEL DISCUSSION
The panel discussion provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs to be paired with industry professionals and successful restaurant and club owners in a Q&A format.


COCKTAIL RECEPTION AND NETWORKING EVENT

The evening kicks off with a cocktail reception that provides an opportunity to meet other entrepreneurs and begin creating connections. The networking event will be in the form of a booth show where industry providers will demonstrate their product and service. The vendors include coffee purveyors, insurance brokers, point of sales providers, merchant services, food purveyors, consultants and other organizations.
